According to the Tanakh, David was the second Jewish king, and the first from the tribe of Judah. He was a very righteous king, as well as an acclaimed warrior, musician and poet, traditionally credited for composing many of the psalms contained in the Book of Psalms.
Life before becoming king[]
When Goliath was causing danger to the Jews, David decided to fight him and had faith in G-d. David hit Goliath with a rock from a slingshot and that killed him.
However, Saul became jealous of David and tried to kill him. David realized this with the help of Saul's son Jonathan, and realized that he had to flee. He had to flee to many places, and even made an alliance with a Philistine, to flee from Saul.
However, when Saul died, David mourned for Saul, even after all the pain Saul caused him. David was supposed to become king then, but first Bnei Yisreal, with the exception of his tribe Judah, accepted Ish-bosheth as king. When Ish-bosheth died, David became the king of all of Bnei Yisrael.
As king[]
When David was king, he was a great and humble king for the most part. He led Bnei Yisrael through wars, and hard times. He even wanted to build the Beis Hamikdash, although G-d did not let him. He was greatly troubled though- his children were dying. One died in a rebellion against him, he was killed by David's army general Yoav. Another one of his sons got caught by a branch while trying to flee someone, and his hair choked him to death.
David one time asked G-d to test him, but G-d gave him a test that even he couldn't overcome. He once saw Bathsheba bathing, and had intercourse with her, despite him not having been married to her. They had Solomon. Solomon lived to become the wisest person in existence.
