[edit] Formatting

Compared to HTML, editing MediaWiki content rather easy. Below, one can learn the syntax of wiki markup.

[edit] Bold and italics

Bold and italics are added by surrounding a word or phrase with multiple apostrophes ('):

  • italics is rendered as italics (2 apostrophes on both sides)
  • bold is rendered as bold (3 apostrophes on both sides)
  • bolded italics is rendered as bolded italics (2+3=5 apostrophes on both sides)
you can also nest them:
  • This is italics! is rendered as This is italics!
and
  • This is bolded! is rendered as This is bolded!

[edit] Headings and subheadings

Headings and subheadings are an easy way to improve the organization of an article. If you can see two or more distinct topics being discussed, you can break up your article by inserting a heading for each section.

Headings can be created like this:

  • ==Top level heading== (2 equals signs)
  • ===Subheading=== (3 equals signs)
  • ====Another level down==== (4 equals signs)
  • =====Lowest level===== (5 equals signs)

see Headings for a view of they look.

If the article has at least three headings, a table of contents (TOC) will automatically be generated.

[edit] Indenting

To indent text, place a colon (:) at the beginning of the line.

This line has been indented.

To indent more add another colon:

This is indented.
This is indented more.
Even more!
Now I am being silly.
Enough already!

[edit] Bullets and numbering

The syntax allows for numbered and unnumbered lists.

[edit] Bullets

Bullets are added by placing a asterisk (*) at the beginning of the line.

  • This
  • is
  • a
  • bulleted
  • list!

[edit] Numbering

Numbers are added using the number sign or hash symbol (#) at the beginning of the line.

  1. This
  2. is
  3. a
  4. numbered
  5. list!

[edit] Nesting of lists

numbered and unnumbered lists can be nested. The nested part is automatically indented.

  1. This
  2. numbered
    1. list
  3. includes
    • a
      • bulleted
    • list
  4. inside
    1. of
      1. it.

[edit] Links

Besides actual content, links are the most important part of any wiki.

[edit] Internal linking

Double square brackets and are used for linking.

  • to link to an article on the main namespace: Article name is used.
  • to link to an article on a different namespace: Namespace:Article name is used.
Also, it is worth noting that since this wikicity should ideally be available in many languages including Yiddish here is the way to link to the Main Page of the Yiddish verison of Judaism (when it is created): yi:Judaism
  • to link to something and not have it's formal name showing a "vertical line" or "pipe" (|) (which is SHIFT+BACKSLASH on english-layout and other keyboards) is used: Bob does this Bob

Some other editing tips

  • Explain your edit in the 'Summary' box between the edit window and the bottom row of grey buttons. By filling it the summary box, it allows you to tell members of your wiki community why you made a certain change to an article, making communication easier. You only need to type a short message here, for example 'added introduction'.
  • Use the 'Show preview' button to check your edit before saving. Remember to save your preview before moving on. The preview button gives you a chance to check your edit for formatting and typos before it's up on the wiki for all to see. It also spares you the grief of having to go back and make another change after saving an article.
  • If you are logged in, you can mark an edit as minor by checking the 'This is a minor edit' box. This lets other editors know your edit is very small.
  • Pages that start with 'User:' are personal pages. While it's considered impolite to make major edits to other people's user pages without permission, feel free to leave messages for people on their User_talk pages.
  • Always remember to sign your talk page comments with four tildes ( ~~~~). That way, the person you're writing to will know who sent him/her the message.

Formatting

Most text formatting is usually done with wiki markup, so you don't have to learn HTML.

See Help:Formatting and Help:HTML.

Links

Links are important on wikis to help readers navigate your site. The more your pages are linked to each other, the easier it is for readers to find what they're looking for.

See Help:Links, Help:External link and also Category:Link help on Wikia Help.

Wiki variables and templates

Use SITENAME to see the current Wikia. For instance, SITENAME on this site prints out as Wikia Help.

That and a few other templates are common to MediaWiki sites. For a complete list of these "magic words", see magic words on Meta.

You can create templates. After you create the page Template:XXX, using the command XXX will include that content in your current page. So, if you have something that needs to be included on many other pages, you might want to use a template.

Most templates available on the Central Wikia can be used on individual Wikia wikis with just "wikia:" prefixed to the name. See Help:Shared templates.
