Jacob is the third of the primary Patriachs of Judaism. He was the son of Isaac and Rebecca, twin to Esau, grandson of Abraham and Sarah. The twelve tribes of Israel were based on his twelve sons.

Jacob was renamed Israel after wrestling with an angel. In Hebrew, Jacob is Yacov, יַעֲקֹב; Israel is Yis'rael, יִשְׂרָאֵל.

Jacob married Leah and Rachel. He had children with each wife as well as their maidservants, Bilhah and Zilpah. Jacob's twelve sons were Reuben, Simeon, Levi, Judah, Dan, Naphtali, Gad, Asher, Issachar, Zebulun, Joseph and Benjamin. His daughter was Dinah.
