[edit] Language
[edit] English
- Use standard English.
- Proper nouns, adjectives and titles are always capitalized.
- Words at the beginning of a sentence are capitalized.
- For spelling and grammar, use American English, as opposed to British English. (Example: Color/Colour)
- Do not write words in ALL CAPS for emphasis, use bold instead.
[edit] Hebrew
- Hebrew should only be used to display how a word appears in Hebrew, or for hebrew quotes. It should never be used casually inside of English text.
- If using a Hebrew word in article text, transliterate it using the wiki's standard for transliteration.
[edit] Choosing Words
- There are many cases where there are several words that mean similar things but have different connotations. This guide will help determine what terminology to use in what case.
[edit] Point of View and Ideology
- See main policy: Judaism:Point of View
[edit] Formatting
- The page name or article topic should be in bold the first time it appears in a page's intro.
- Images are recommended for pages where images are applicable.
- If the title of a book, movie, or other published work is used, it should be italicized.
[edit] Naming
- Article names should always be in Title Case. If there is an article name which has multiple words, each permutation of the capitalization should be a redirect to the main article. (Example: Jewish community center, Jewish Community center, Jewish community Center → Jewish Community Center)
- Article names should be singular in most cases, unless there is a pressing reason to make it plural. Pluralized versions of names should be made to redirect to the singular. (Example: Prayers → Prayer)
- Category names should be plural in most cases, unless there is a pressing reason to make it singular.
- If an article name is in Hebrew, it should reflect the wiki standards for Hebrew spelling. If a word has one or more popular spellings that differ from the standard spelling, they should be made to redirect to the standard spelling. (Example: Halacha, → Halakha)
- Article names should never use Hebrew text, even for redirects. Hebrew text displays improperly in many browsers, and would be especially problematic as a page title, given how many places a wiki has that display titles.
- Organizations or other things which have acronyms should have the page about them made at the full name, not at the acronym. The acronym should be made to redirect to the full name. (Example: JCC → Jewish Community Center) In the case of overlapping acronyms (an acronym can mean two different things), the acronym page should be a disambiguation page.
- If a page name could contain a "The" at the beginning, it should be located at the title without the "the" and have the one with it redirect to it. (Example: The Bible → Bible) The only exception is in a case where the title is the title of a published work and that published work has "The" in its title.
