"Our goal is clear - to wipe Israel off the map." - President Aref of Iraq - May 31 1967
On June 5, 1967, tensions between Israel and its Arab neighbors, which had existed since the nation was founded in 1948, grew worse. Eygpt ordered the United Nations peace keeping force to leave so they could launch an attack on Israel. Israel struck first and defeated the combined forces of Egypt, Syria and Jordan in six short days.
Today, Israelis celebrate their victory in the Six-Day War through a national holiday called Jerusalem Day.
